How to Make Carpet Binding Strips

Carpet binding strips are an essential component for finishing the edges of carpets. These strips help to prevent fraying and prolong the life of your carpet. Step 1: Measure the Carpet
The first step is to measure the length and width of the carpet that you want to bind. This will help you determine how much binding strip you need to make. Add an additional 6 inches to the length and width measurements to ensure that you have enough binding strip to work with.

Step 2: Cut the Binding Fabric
Next, cut the binding fabric into strips that are 2 inches wide and the length of the carpet plus 6 inches. You can use any fabric that you like, but cotton and polyester are the most commonly used materials for binding strips.

Step 3: Fold the Fabric
Fold the fabric in half lengthwise with the right sides facing each other. Press the fold with an iron to create a crease.

Step 4: Sew the Fabric
Sew the fabric together along the length of the strip, leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam to secure it.

Step 5: Trim the Seam
Trim the seam allowance to 1/8 inch and press the seam open.

Step 9: Trim the Excess Binding Strip
Trim the excess binding strip, leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Step 10: Fold the Binding Strip Over
Fold the binding strip over the edge of the carpet and pin it in place. Sew the binding strip to the back of the carpet with a straight stitch.
